ABOUT US
I am a 1985 graduate of the University of Pretoria. Subsequent to my undergraduate training I pursued my passion in dentistry in the field of endodontics (the dental term for “root canal therapy”) with a BSc degree with Honours in Dental Sciences with Endodontics as main subject (2000) and a Graduate Diploma in Dentistry in the branch of Endodontics (2007). In 2009 I completed my Masters Degree in Endodontics and currently I have a state of the artfacility specialising in, and restricted to the practice of Endodontics.
CASES
ENDODONTICS
It is the speciality in dentistry concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of disease or injuries to the dental pulp. The pulp (also called the nerve) is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains the nerves and blood vessels. Root canal therapy is a predictable and safe and effective means of saving teeth that would otherwise be lost.
When the pulp is injured or diseased and unable to repair itself it becomes inflamed and eventually dies. Causes of pulp death are decay, deep fillings, trauma, cracks in teeth, gum disease, etc. When the pulp is exposed to bacteria from decay or saliva that has leaked into the pulp system, infection can occur. If left untreated, infection occurs at the tip of the root forming an abscess. This can lead to swelling, pain and tooth loss.
Extraction followed by either a removable prosthesis; crown and bridge work or implant therapy with crown placement. In the vast majority of cases removal of your own tooth should only be considered as the last resort.
Root canal treated teeth are at risk of being lost from cracking and disintegrating. In order to help protect the tooth from further breakdown and deterioration these teeth should be crowned (in lay terms called a “cap”).
Local anaesthesia is given and the tooth is isolated with a rubber dam (a special hygienic rubber sheet) to prevent contamination of the tooth from saliva and to protect the patient from accidently swallowing any chemicals or foreign objects. An opening is made through the chewing surface of the tooth to gain access to the root canal system. The pulp tissue is painlessly removed with special endodontic files. Root canal lengths are measured with an electronic locator and confirmation takes place by means of an x-ray. The root canal/s are cleaned, disinfected, enlarged and shaped with rotary instruments and chemicals. The root canal/s is filled with a rubber substance called gutta percha that is plasticised with heat to obtain a three dimensional filling of the prepared root canal spaces. The tooth is then restored with a foundation filling and the tooth is ready for the referring dentist to place a crown on the tooth.
This procedure takes place over one or two visits. During the first visit the failed root canal therapy filling is removed. The canal/s is prepared similar to a normal root canal procedure. A medicament is placed in the affected area and completion of the procedure takes place with seven days.
Discomfort experienced following root canal therapy depends on a variety of factors. Each case will be discussed with you prior to commencement of treatment. Following treatment you will receive a brochure that explains all the symptoms that might be experienced.
Only at the time of your consultation can an accurate indication of treatment costs be provided. This cannot be determined without examining your tooth, as the complexity and challenges of treatment varies from case to case.
We try to keep fees as reasonable as possible while providing care of the highest quality. Fees reflect our clinical time, quality materials and investment in equipment. Private health insurance rebates may offset some of your costs for more expensive procedures, but restrictive fund rules often preclude payment for needed treatment. Many people now find that these funds do not offer good value for money.

TESTIMONIALS
Having researched Dentists who specialize in Root Canal treatment I was recommended to Dr Boela by a Oral Hygienist, I found the care and interest from all the staff to be above exception . Hearing about root canal can be rather daunting, I had 2 root canal treatments and might I say I never had not one once of discomfort or pain even the administration of the injections was completely painless. I’m writing this to help all people that have had bad dental experiences.

I highly recommend Dr. Boela as an exceptional endodontist for root canal treatment. I've visited him three times over six years, and each experience has been outstanding. Dr. Boela's expertise, care, and professionalism are remarkable. His office, set in a serene environment, is equipped with cutting-edge technology. Despite being unable to save my tooth on the last visit, his treatment was thorough. What truly distinguishes Dr. Boela is his integrity and generosity. He showed genuine concern for my well-being. His staff is also top-notch. If you need root canal treatment, Dr. Boela is the expert to see.

Pretty amazing endodontist - i.e. Dr Boela only does root canal treatments and nothing else. I needed a redo of a root canal treatment that had been done in Germany and the treatment was completely pain free and very thorough.
Dr Boela, Sharon and their team are lovely people. The expert treatment comes at its price but I’ve I had all my root canal treatments done this expertly from the beginning I would not have needed this redo. So it’s money we’ll spent.
